The unique characteristics of the neck and décolleté combined with the distinctive features of the skin mean that this area is more prone to aging. But did you know it shows definite signs of aging? Find out how they are formed and learn how to treat them.
NECK STRESS: WHERE AGING STARTS
One of the most common causes of wrinkles is repetitive movement. This is why bad posture when looking at our mobiles, spending hours seated, or sleeping face down can accelerate aging on the neck and décolleté. This tension is known as neck stress and is one of the first things to keep in mind when establishing how to reduce neck wrinkles.
TECH NECK: THE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY
When we have bad posture when using our mobile devices, this causes tension in the neck, shoulders and back, which is known as tech neck. This can also include aesthetic effects such as developing a double chin or horizontal lines.
DOUBLE CHIN: WHEN CONTOURS LOSE DEFINITION
A double chin is made of accumulated fat located below the chin that blurs the facial contours. This could be due to a number of factors such as genetics, age, being overweight or postural habits like tech neck.
One of the first signs of aging to appear on the neck is a lack of tone. Having less collagen and elastin — and these diminish over time — encourages the appearance of sagginess. The skin loses elasticity and the capacity to stay firm.
These refer to the horizontal lines on the neck that appear with age. They are caused by a loss of firmness and the skin’s low resistance to constant movement, although they are also affected by our genetic disposition.
VERTICAL LINES: WRINKLES ON THE DÉCOLLETÉExcessive sun exposure, sleeping face down or on your side, a lack of hydration in the skin: the main causes of vertical lines. These are the specific wrinkles on the décolleté and are accentuated by the lack of collagen — and as a result, firmness — that comes with aging.
Platysma bands are the vertical folds that appear on the neck and go from the chin to the clavicle. A lack of firmness causes them, and their name comes from where they are found on the body, on the platysma muscle. These bands start to appear from when we reach 40 years of age when the lower platysma muscles start to loosen.
HYPERPIGMENTATION: THE UNRESOLVED ISSUE
Dark spots most commonly occur on the décolleté, an area specially exposed to the sun that we do not protect enough.
